Fine Arts Work Center Summer Workshop Scholarships for Writers

Summary

The City of Providence and the Fine Arts Work Center Summer Workshop Scholarship

A new program in partnership with Provincetown, MA’s historic and renowned Fine Arts Work Center (FAWC). FAWC offers state-of-the art workshops and residencies for artists and writers worldwide in Provincetown. FAWC offers over 60+ writing and visual arts workshops across nine weeks for its Summer Workshop Program, led by renowned industry professionals in Provincetown from mid-June to mid-August.

ACT x FAWC are excited to introduce a new scholarship for four Providence writers to attend one weeklong writing workshop at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA at no cost.

Project Goals and Context

To provide Providence writers the opportunity to experience craft workshops led by renowned, published authors. This gives ACT the opportunity to extend resources to literary artists, ensuring its commitment to the literary arts community of Providence. This initiative also affirms ACT’s Creative Workforce Development efforts to sustain Providence’s local arts economy by investing into workforce opportunities for artists. Writers selected for this scholarship will have the opportunity to gain craft expertise and experience, taught by industry and field experts.

Timeline

When: Summer from May—August 2026

Location: Fine Arts Work Center, 24 Pearl Street, Provincetown, MA 02657

Application Process: Four writers are selected from an application process ACT administers and creates in winter to attend summer workshops in the summer of that same year. ACT will pay FAWC to cover tuition and housing at FAWC for four Providence writers.

Timeline to Apply (TBD for FY27):

  • Application opens early January
  • Application closes early February
  • Selected applicants confirmed and notified by late February
  • ACT notifies FAWC with the selected applicants in early March
  • Applicants confirm workshop selections with FAWC in early March

Cost: Free for selected applicants. Applicants will receive a $500 stipend from the Fine Arts Work Center ahead of their scheduled workshop to assist with travel.

Eligibility

The call for writers will be open to all writers living in Providence aged 18 and older. Students enrolled in any degree program are ineligible to apply.

About FAWC

The Fine Arts Work Center (FAWC) in Provincetown, MA is a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging the growth and development of emerging visual artists and writers and to enhancing the year-round vitality of the historic art community of Provincetown.

The Work Center was founded in 1968 by a group of artists who envisioned a place in Provincetown, MA, the country’s most enduring artists’ community, where artists and writers could live and work together in the early phase of their careers.

About the Summer Workshop Program. FAWC’s signature education program offers 36 week-long, open-enrollment creative writing workshops over the course of nine weeks of summer. All workshops are taught by nationally recognized writers. Previous teachers include Terrence Hayes, Carmen Maria Machado, Major Jackson, Melissa Febos, Alexander Chee, Porsha Olayiwola, and Vievee Francis. A week at FAWC offers a variety of readings, artist talks and special events that are free and open to the public.

Scholarships provide free tuition and housing as well as a $500 stipend to help defray the costs of transportation and food associated with taking a writing workshop.
