Department of Art, Culture and Tourism releases its 2025 Addendum to the Art in City Life Plan

At its June 5th meeting, the Art in City Life Commission enthusiastically approved an update to Providence’s public art plan. The 2025 Addendum to the Art in City Life Plan keeps the original vision alive while making sure the plan is actionable. It builds on the strong foundation set in 2018 and ensures that public art continues to thrive in Providence—thoughtful, inclusive, and aligned with the PVDx2031 cultural plan.

Ultimately the Addendum leaves intact the four main program streams of the Plan: Landmark Public Art; Public Art Residencies; Civic Infrastructure Projects; and Temporary Projects while bringing details pertaining to their administration into alignment with the practical capacities of the Department of Art, Culture and Tourism. Key points of alignment advanced by the Addendum include:

  1. Landmark works shall be sited on City public property;
  2. Cultural Strategists in Residence shall support the work of community organizations through open ideas calls;
  3. Extended-view public art shall be an intermediary designation for works on view more than two years but less than ten; and
  4. The Special Committee for Commemorative works shall be charged with reviewing all proposals primarily commemorative in nature.
